1. The metal that is hardened by cold work is in an unstable state at a high energy level. Only if it is possible, the unstable state of the metal will transform to a relatively stable state. This phenomenon is called weakening. The size of the weakening depends on the temperature, the duration of the temperature, and the degree of strengthening. Since metal is simultaneously subjected to force and heat during mechanical processing, the final properties of the surface metal after processing depend on the combined effect of strengthening and weakening.
